About Alan

Alan is an Education Officer with Dumfries & Galloway Council. He has a particular interest in Learning & Teaching and previously worked in the Education Department of Glasgow City Council.

Alan has given presentations at national and international conferences on the educational applications of distance learning over video conferencing in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, London and other UK cities. In 2015 he gave a presentation in Orevisi, Finland on his work in this field. Alan also gave a live presentation to 1300 delegates at a Learning Conference in Florida over video-link from Scotland.

He has developed links with the Manhattan School of Music, New York and was a guest there in April 2011 for a video conference masterclass event presentation to Ottowa. In 2013 he was invited to work with Australian teachers in remote school and college communities in Victoria, Australia to discuss how distance learning can be developed in educational settings.

Alan has produced an Instruments of the Orchestra DVD ‘A Musical Mystery Tour’ with Bafta award winner and film director Norman Stone, in partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama.

Alan has written a wide range of music for Television including:

  • BBC News Reporting Scotland theme tune (1992)
  • Channel 4 ‘Let’s Dance’ (1996)
  • Incidental music for BBC Drama  ‘Florence Nightingale’ (2008)
  • BBC Documentary  ‘Jane Haining – The Scot Who Died in Auschwitz’ (2014)  
Alan recorded with legendary Beatles’ Producer Sir George Martin in 1999 in Air Studios, London on the ‘Voices of Promise’ children’s charity album.
